After a day at sea, we arrived at Roatán, an island in the Bay Islands off the coast of Honduras.

The town of Coxen Hole, where the ship docked, is very primitive and it was obvious that the people were very poor.  Hurricane Mitch devastated this area a few years ago, and the recovery is slow.  Most of the people depend on tourism to survive, however the Wind is the only cruise ship that currently visits Roatán.  We were told after the fact that we should have gone to another part of the island, which supposedly has some of the best snorkeling in the world.

We spent the day at a beach park designed for tourists, called La Palma.  There were shops, a snack bar and lots of space to sit in the sun or shade.  The water was too still and murky to enjoy swimming, however, and there were nasty biting flies. Some of the entertainers from the ship waded to the island in the distance and were covered with bites.
