A Tour of the Garden District

One day, Marky and I woke up uncharacteristically early (as in, before dinner time) and decided to tour the Garden District, an old residential area slightly upriver (west) of the French Quarter.

We caught the streetcar (above) on Canal Street (left), which separates the French Quarter from the new downtown.

On a roundabout we saw a monument to Robert E. Lee (right)

This house hosted the New Orleans rendition of The Real World.  It is kind of shabby now.

These people wanted to tour the cemetery but it was closed.

Due to the high water table, everyone in New Orleans is buried above ground.

In need of coffee, we found a small shopping attraction in a former ice rink.  Inside was a shop specializing in Anne Rice stuff.  The authoress lives in the District.

A stately brick house flew the French flag.  As you can see, we got our near-daily dose of rain.

A beautiful home nearly obscured by enormous old trees.
