Mirliton Festival

After church on Sunday, Jerry and I went to the 8th Annual Mirliton Festival, produced by the Bywater Neighbourhood Association. The Festival, which took place in Markey Park, appears to celebrate the existance of the mirliton, which is a small green squash, native to south and central America that can be eaten in a number of ways and figured prominently in Creole cooking.

We enjoyed mirliton stuffed with crabmeat, shrimp & corn chowder, and barbequed ribs, while listening to the Miracle Faith Young Adult Choir, Elvis Marsalis, and Anders Osborn.

In addition, there was some teriffic art on sale... mosaics, oils, and some ceramics that appeared to have black-and-white photos of various New Orleans scenery glazed right onto them. If I thought I could have gotten one home in one piece, I would have bought it.

Bywater is separated from the French Quarter by the neighbourhood Jerry lives in, the Faubourg Marigny. Right now it is kind of struggling, but as the rents in the Marigny go up, more money should make its way into this community.
