It being Sunday, our next stop was St. Mary's-By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Pacific Grove. This fine Gothic building was dedicated in 1887, but in 1911 it was expanded by splitting it in half and adding an additional section in between. BELOW RIGHT The interior of the church is constructed of numerous kinds of wood, with intricate tracery and beautiful redwood wainscotting. BELOW The parish is in the process of restoring the stained-glass windows one by one. The window below is an original Tiffany, donated in 1992 by Cyrus H. McCormick in memory of his wife Harriet. Married at St. Mary's in 1889, the McCormicks, of the great McCormick farm machinery fortune, were generous benefactors of the church all of their lives. |

One thing we couldn't help but notice was the number of wonderfully-maintained vintage automobiles, especially Volkswagens, that we saw wherever we went. Here Linda poses with a vintage Beetle. Note the whitewalls! |

After Mass, we had a great lunch at the Red House Cafe, which I had read about in our guidebooks. |

Pacific Grove has lots of beautiful old houses, like this Victorian and the Inn below, which I think was called the Inn at Lovers' Point. |

Pacific Grove is near the spot where Monterey Bay meets the open Pacific, which is called Point Penos. We enjoyed watching the surf pounding the rocks. There's a lighthouse there, but we were not able to get good photos of it. Sorry, Charlie! |
| This deer grazed, unpurturbed by the traffic, near the lighthouse. | ![]() |
